Elephants

This series marks the point of origin of an imaginary in which the visual emerges as a response to that which resists verbal formulation.

The works, of variable dimensions, are constructed through an openly material approach to painting: thick pigment, texture, accumulation, and the trace of gesture are left exposed. The surface becomes a field of friction, a site where matter asserts its own weight.

 

The painting incorporates collage procedures through the direct integration of fragments of canvas, metal, wood, and fabric adhered to the pictorial plane.

 

The image is organized through tensions between accumulation and void, between material density and chromatic vibration.

There are experiences so vast and intense that they exceed language. Faced with that limit, painting operates as a mode of approach: a visual writing that skirts the unsayable and transforms it into presence.

 

Through color and matter, what cannot be named finds a possible form of inscription. A beloved and noble animal, the elephant appears marked by a profound duality: solidity and fragility, lightness and weight, resistance and contained suffering. It functions as a shared figure, a body that bears the mark of a tragedy difficult to escape, yet insists on ceasing to be silence.

 

In these paintings, the elephant does not represent, it sustains. And in that act of sustaining, the image becomes an act.
